Peter Obi Threatens N5 Billion Lawsuit Against Kenneth Okonkwo Over Alleged Defamation

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has threatened to file a N5 billion lawsuit against former ally and ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo for alleged defamation.

In a pre‑action letter, Obi accused Okonkwo of falsely claiming on Channels TV that Obi and NDC South‑east caucus demanded N10 million bribes from House of Representatives aspirants. The aspirant in question, Obunike Ohaegbu, has since denied making any such statements to Okonkwo. Obi demands a retraction and apology within seven days.

Key POINTS:

The defamation threat could escalate political tensions between opposition figures ahead of 2027.
A N5 billion lawsuit, if filed, would be one of the highest‑profile defamation cases in Nigerian politics.
The denial by the alleged source (Ohaegbu) weakens Okonkwo’s position and may force a public retraction.
Legal action could distract both politicians from substantive campaign issues.
The outcome may set a precedent for how political accusations are handled in the media.

Okonkwo has seven days to comply with Obi’s demands; failure to do so will result in a lawsuit seeking N5 billion in damages.
