CAF President Patrice Motsepe has announced an expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations from 24 to 28 teams, starting with the 2027 edition co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17.
Motsepe announced at a press conference in South Africa on Wednesday, stating that the move aims to give more teams the chance to reach the finals.
The last four editions have featured 24 sides, a format introduced at the 2019 tournament in Egypt. The 2027 finals will be followed by the 2028 edition before the tournament switches to a four-year cycle.
