FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pulled the plug on the plan to allow private investment in the World Cup after a furious global backlash.
The plan, announced on Tuesday, sparked immediate opposition from UEFA, which threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions, and from CONCACAF, AFC and the European Union.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Infantino was “the wrong man for the job.” On Friday, Infantino’s special advisor Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling the proposal “a bad deal for football.” By Saturday, Infantino conceded: “This proposal will not proceed.
