President Donald Trump: USA Finally to Impose 20% ‘Safe Passage’ Fee on Ships Using Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has announced a 20 percent “safe passage” fee on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the levy would help cover the cost of maintaining US security in the strategic waterway.โ€‹

In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump declared the US would be known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and called the fee “a matter of FAIRNESS.” The announcement comes as the US resumed strikes against Iran following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement.

Over the weekend, US Central Command hit 140 targets, with strikes continuing into Monday. Iran has accused the US of undermining talks with Oman and has retaliated with strikes against US facilities in Gulf countries. The escalation has sent oil prices surging, with Brent crude climbing 3.60 percent to $78.7 a barrel.

Key Pointsโ€‹

Higher oil prices may increase fuel costs for Nigerians and global consumers.
The fee could raise shipping costs, affecting trade and commodity prices.
US-Iran tensions threaten stability in a critical global energy chokepoint.
Escalation signals a shift in US military posture and regional security strategy.
Timing of the fee, amid resumed strikes, heightens geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Global oil markets and shipping costs will react to the fee and ongoing US-Iran hostilities, with potential ripple effects on energy prices worldwide.
