Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has called on Ghana’s business community to support local entertainment talent, drawing comparisons with how Nigerian billionaires invest heavily in their music stars.
Speaking during a recent interview on the When We Sit podcast, the musician recalled a chance encounter with Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu inside a London suit shop, where the business mogul disclosed the huge sum he invested in a rising Nigerian musician.
While declining to disclose the identity of the artiste or the exact figure due to confidentiality, the rapper expressed shock at the scale of financial backing being provided to talent in Nigeria.
“What Ghanaian artists do is organic. I give a business plan, even with that it is hard to get some people to come in. But in Nigeria, I think they take a lot of risk, most of the rich people with money, take a lot of risk to put their people on. If I breakdown what it takes to do the O2 Arena, you will freak out, but then we still have to do it,” Sarkodie said.
The rapper noted that Elumelu explained his motivation for funding the unnamed artiste as both a cultural and commercial strategy to project the country globally.
“I just had to support him, I think he has the talent, he can take Nigeria to global level as he knows doing that will also helps his business,” Sarkodie quoted the billionaire as saying.
The musician urged wealthy Ghanaians to emulate their Nigerian counterparts by backing local creative talent to help position Ghanaian music on the global stage.
