The US Mission in Nigeria has updated visa holders on permitted uses of the B1/B2 visitor visa, warning that improper use could result in permanent ineligibility for future US visas.
In a statement on its official X account, the embassy listed approved purposes for the non-immigrant visa as business meetings, visiting family, and tourism. The B1 category covers business activities such as attending meetings, conferences, or short-term training, while the B2 category covers tourism, visiting family and friends, and medical treatment.
The visa typically permits stays of up to six months but does not permit employment, enrollment in long-term academic programs, or any activities suggesting intent to immigrate. The reminder comes months after the US announced partial visa suspension for nationals of 19 countries, including Nigeria, under Presidential Proclamation 10998.
